Geeks With Blogs

About Me:
I am a Female SharePoint Developer (a platinum unicorn). I have been working with SharePoint since I attended the Portal University in 2005. I hold a BA in Computer Science from the University of Missouri - Kansas City. I love playing Rockband, organizing user group meetings, working with code, attending events as a speaker or organizer, and having bizarre conversations about geek things with cool people. Rachel Appel suggested a really great book to me the other day “Knowing Your Value: Women, Money, and Getting What Your Worth” by Mika Brzezinski.  I have spent a couple hours reading about 3 chapters and it makes a lot of sense.  This book talks about how salary negotiations rarely happen with women in general and that most women don’t know there worth.  Everything she does I find that I do myself by undermining my own value.  I was wondering if there were others like me out there who devalue themselves in the work force.  I know I have been through a lot of changes lately, but this is one thing that I’d like to improve upon in the upcoming months.  I want to do things that will promote my own self worth.  I would recommend that the rest of you out there read this book no matter if you are of either gender.  I think you can gain a better perspective from the book.  I endeavor to write more about the book in the upcoming weeks.

I was talking with our vp of support the other day about this--she said that over her years here, the guys in her dept have had no issue asking for raises and/or promotions when they feel they're due, but the women always wait for management to make the decision.
