To connect and authenticate with the Team Foundation Service Preview you need to install the hotfix KB2581206. While setting up a new machine to work with TFS Azure (#TfsService) i encountered a problem after installing service patch KB2581206.

Reason: if you fail to install service pack 1 before installing the hotfix you might see strange behaviour with Visual Studio. Thanks to Trevor from Microsoft for confirmation.

=> How can I tell if i have Visual Studio Service Pack 1 installed?

If you have Visual Studio Service pack 1 installed, your development environment should show you a version of 10.0.40219.1. But if you do not have Visual Studio service pack 1 installed but install the hotfix KB2581206 directly then your development environment version would be

You can see your development environment version by opening visual studio, from the menu bar click ‘Help’ and chose ‘About Visual Studio’

=> Summary

So, in this blog post we saw the cause for visual studio crashing and strange behaviour if the hotfix KB2581206 is not installed before installing visual studio 2010 SP1.

I have Visual studio 2010 SP1 installed with KB2581206 on my laptop. I just want to use my local tfs server for source control.

The problem is when I am trying to connect to TFS server, it gives me TF30172: You do not have permission to create a new team project.

Where I can set up the permissions, so I can create new project.

I am new to TFS, I used Visual source safe in past.

Thank you,

The way to create Team Projects is using the Web interface of TFS Preview, not by Visual Studio.

Go to your collection and create your Team Project from there, later you can connect to it using Visual Studio
