Brian Scarbeau Insights from a seasoned Computer Science Trainer

My students have learned how to create a database using webmatrix. I was quite surprised how easy it was for them to create the table and then add fields and records to the database. This is what happens in Lesson 9 if you're following along with the lessons.

In lesson 10 they learned how to use the Access Data Source Control and the datalist web control. It really amazes me how easy it is to drag and drop these controls on the page and then run the web server and VOILA you get to see the database without writing any code.

The students also learned MXDataGrid Properties and to customize the view of the data.

Finally, they learned how to use a dropdown control so users can select an artist and only that information from the database will appear.

Just a little bit of code behind the drop down web control to make this happen and students do understand how it works.

MXDataGrid1.selectedindex = dropdownlist1.selectedindex
databind() 'this code is needed to refresh the data grid

Future lessons will have my students learn about paging and sorting and of course learning to query the database.

Webmatrix has really made it easy for me to teach this important active server material to my high school students.
