Meeting the IT Peeps of Tomorow

Thursday, February 8, 2007 5:12 AM

I had an opportunity yesterday to participate in Red River College's Directions business conference. I was part of roundtable discussions at the end of the day, where students were able to sit and talk with people from industry and get some perspectives on what the job market is like in Winnipeg and what they can expect.

It was interesting hearing them have the same concerns that we did back in college: worrying about the co-op placements and whether grades were good enough to get a good gig, what the job market for their selected stream was going to be (streams are networking, web, programming, or database), and whether all this Agile stuff they hear about is fluff or actually exists. (well, we didn't question Agile back in my college days...but OO analysis and design in general I guess).

One thing was interesting: I was talkign with a student in the web stream, and she was saying that they're learning PHP, DHTML, and web design...but no ASP.NET. They were going to go back and discuss it as a class with the instructor, which is a good thing because I think they're missing out. ASP.NET (and .NET skills in general) are necessities coming out of college now, and one class in VB.NET (which they have) isn't nearly enough.

If any of you get a chance to participate in something like this, I'd definately encourage it...great opportunity to network, but also to give back to the next gen of geeks.
